The Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition group is part of the Department of Science and Technology at University of
Naples “Parthenope”. The research envisaged covers a broad spectrum of issues related to Computer Vision and Pattern
Recognition, Image Processing, and participates in a variety of applied projects, where results and know-how from those
programs are exploited.
Our research is focused on several mainstreams :
Computer vision The research is naturally focused on image analysis and understanding aspects in the large, which are at the basis of all advanced processing. Specific on multiresolution, object recognition, soft computing in image analysis, attentive vision mechanisms with applications to video surveillance, medical imaging, multimedia data treatment.
Pattern Recognition Research in this field is mainly focused on the probabilistic models for pattern recognition, because of their interesting theoretical properties and their wide applicability in (not only) computer vision tasks. Our interest is mainly in investigating Neural Networks, Markov Random Fields and Kernel Methods. We are interested both in methodological, e.g. learning and model selection, and applicative issues, as shape classification, event detection and classification and clustering, tracking, and video surveillance. Our research is also oriented on very promising non probabilistic techniques, as Support Vector Machines.
The group of Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition is active in the Department of Science and Technology of the University of Naples since 2005, but it derives from a research group formerly established at IASS and later at ICAR-CNR. The main efforts have been devoted to more advanced image processing functions, involving scene segmentation and shape characterization; a broad background has been acquired on low level and intermediate level vision tasks involving grey level statistics and structural descriptions. The group has meanwhile developed skills in high level image processing domains, such as the management of knowledge description and of learning capabilities for vision tasks. Research areas are now activated on Soft Computing in Image Analysis, Multimedia and E-learning.

24 June, 2011 - The Symmetry Detection algorithm authored by Shripad Kondra*, Alfredo Petrosino from University of Naples Parthenope has been selected as one of the top winners of “Symmetry Detection from Real World Images” competition. Authors have been awarded by US-NSF for one-thousand-five-hundred US dollars. The algorithm will be presented at the CVPR 2011 workshop (http://www.cvpr2011.org/workshops).

1 November, 2009 - Text book “Operating Systems”, by D. Dhamdhere, whose Italian edition was edited by Alfredo Petrosino has been released. The book aims to explain clearly and at the same time simple concepts and basic techniques of operating systems, starting the reader to the basics and then advanced operational systems and not only knowledge of Linux systems, Windows Vista and Solaris. Interactions with the computer operating system on the one hand and users are outlined through a series of practical details, illustrations, examples and exercises performed. Numerous case studies also show students the analysis of some operational experience they may face during their careers. Each chapter is complemented by a rich array of exercises, advanced problems, lab exercises and questions that allow students to consolidate and check their level of learning. To establish a strong bond with the requirements of the courses of Computer Science and Computer Engineering of the Italian universities, were investigated in the Italian concepts and techniques.
